Charlie was born in Evansville, Indiana
on October 14, 1947. He graduated from
the University of Evansville in 1969
with a Bachelor of Arts in History and
was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi
Honor Society. In 1972, Charlie
graduated Cum Laude from Indiana
University School of Law and returned
home to Evansville to practice law with
his father, Sydney, with |
whom he practiced until 1988.
From 1973 to 1977,
Charlie served as the Director for the Indiana
Lawyers Commission. He was Chairman of the Trial
Lawyers Section of the Indiana State Bar
Association from 1982 to 1983. He served as
Director of the Indiana Trial Lawyers
Association in 1977, Treasurer from 1982 to 1983
and Vice President from 1984 to 1985. Charlie
was the State Committeeman for the Association
of Trial Lawyers of America from 1975 to 1979.
He was President of the Brooks Inns of Court
from 1988 to 1989 and is a Member of the
American Board of Trial Advocates and a Fellow
of the Indiana Bar Foundation. From 2001 until
2002, Charlie was elected to the Indiana
Judicial Nominating Commission. He has been a
Deputy Prosecutor for Vanderburgh County since
1997, has been listed in Best Lawyers in America
since 1987 and has been an adjunct professor of
both Constitutional and Criminal Law at the
University of Southern Indiana since 1996.
Charlie and his
family have a long history of service to the
Evansville community, including the annually
awarded Berger Award at the University of
Evansville and the University of Southern
Indiana. Both are given in memory of his
parents, Sadelle and Sydney.
In 2005, Charlie
was bestowed the honor of the James Bethel
Gresham Award from the Evansville Bar
Association. In that same year, Charlie was
appointed to serve as a member of the Indiana
Supreme Court Rules Committee.
In 1975, Charlie
was admitted to the United States District
Court, Southern District of Indiana and the
United States Court of Appeals Seventh Circuit.
He was admitted to the United States Court of
Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in
1977, the United States Supreme Court in 1981,
the United States District Court Western
District of Kentucky in 1984 and the United
States Court of Appeals Sixth Circuit in 1984.
